Recalling Tomorrow: A Sociological Exploration of Past Futures

Abstract

This paper develops a sociological reflection on the ‘memory of the future’, understood as the recollection
of futures imagined in the past. Moving between memory studies and future studies, it argues that social action is shaped
by horizons of expectation that are both historically situated and socially constructed. By revisiting past futures, the article
highlights their role in interpreting meaning, identity, and generational dynamics. Drawing on authors such as Koselleck,
Luhmann, and Benjamin, it shows how these memories function not only as historiographical tools but also as critical
resources, preserving unrealized possibilities and ‘betrayed promises’. The paper ultimately suggests that recalling past
futures can reactivate imagination and responsibility, opening alternative horizons in a time marked by a perceived crisis
of the future.

Questo contributo propone una riflessione sociologica sulla “memoria del futuro”, intesa come ricordo dei
futuri immaginati nel passato. Collocandosi tra memory studies e future studies, l’articolo sostiene che l’azione sociale è
orientata da orizzonti di aspettativa storicamente situati e socialmente costruiti. Il recupero dei futuri passati consente di
comprendere il senso dell’azione, le dinamiche identitarie e i rapporti generazionali. Attraverso il confronto con autori
come Koselleck, Luhmann e Benjamin, si evidenzia come tali memorie non siano solo strumenti storiografici, ma anche
risorse critiche, capaci di conservare possibilità inespresse e “promesse tradite”. L’articolo conclude che il richiamo ai
futuri del passato può riattivare immaginazione e responsabilità, riaprendo il campo delle possibilità in una fase segnata
dalla crisi del futuro.
